40,000 Pennsylvanians May Lose Their Health Coverage

Even though health care reform has passed, many would be surprised to know that about 40,000 adults in Pennsylvania may be losing their access to the adultBasic program.

adultBasic is an affordable health care option for adults who have recently lost health coverage and meet certain income guidelines. Participants pay $36 a month and co-pays ranging from $10 to $50 for doctor and hospital visits. In Pennsylvania, more than 40,000 are receiving the full benefits of the program, while the waitlist stands at over 380,000.

This program will end on December 31,2010, when a law requiring financial support from insurance providers will expire. Legislation has been introduced that will provide for continued payments until at least 2014, when the federal programs to provide coverage go into effect. The House Insurance Committee is scheduled to hold a hearing on this bill on Tuesday May 4 at 9:00 am.

The Congressional Joint Economic Committee is holding a public hearing on the economic impact of eliminating the American Community Survey (ACS) at 2:30 p.m., in Room 210 of the Canon House Office Building. Witnesses that will be speaking in opposition to the move to eliminate the ACS are Vincent Barabba, former director of the Census Bureau in two GOP administrations and Ken Simonson, chief economist for the Association of General Contractors and also representing the National Association of Business Economists. Census data tells us that 13% of Pennsylvania households live in poverty. In reality, even more households don’t have the income they need to reach self-sufficiency.
