Quilting to Help Ensure Pennsylvanians are Covered

Right now in Congress members of a Super Committee are working to reduce the federal deficit by $1.2 trillion.  Pennsylvania Senator Pat Toomey is one of the lawmakers on this Super Committee.
Help urge Senator Toomey to stand up for Pennsylvanians byjoining the Keep Pennsylvanians Covered quilting campaign. Before the November 23 deadline, the group will present Senator Toomey with a quilt crafted by volunteers.  Share your message to be featured on a patch! Email Athena to have your health care message included.

LIHEAP NOW OPEN FOR APPLICATIONS

The Low Income Heating Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) is the energy assistance program that helps thousands across the state afford their winter utility bills. The cash grants go directly to the energy provider and defray the costs of home heating.

Because of budget cuts to the program and an expected increase in demand, those seeking assistance this winter season are urged to apply now. Funding for the program will be first come, first serve. Applications can be done online here.

LEARN ABOUT POVERTY IN BUCKS COUNTY

On Friday, November 18th, the Bucks County Women’s Advocacy Coalition will hold a press conference on recent poverty statistics. Between 2009 and 2010, 43,000 people in Bucks County fell into poverty.

The conference will address possible solutions, including educational attainment and workforce training. The event will begin at 9:30 a.m. in Room I at the Bucks County Intermediate Unit, 705 N. Shady Retreat Road in Doylestown. For more info, visit the BCWAC website.


BEEN WANTING TO GO TO SCHOOL LATER IN LIFE? HERE’S A FAIR FOR YOU

What: Returning to Learning: A College Fair for Adults
When: Tuesday, November 8, 10 am to 2 pm

If you’re an adult who’s wanted to return to college, or attend for the first time, there’s a college fair tomorrow with you in mind. The annual Returning to Learning: A College Fair for Adults caters to non-traditional students and will take place tomorrow at the Municipal Services Building, 1417 JFK Blvd.

Many area universities will be in attendance giving adults the information they need to begin the enrollment process, including Drexel, Widener, LaSalle, Cheyney, Rutgers and the Community College of Philadelphia.

REGISTER NOW FOR THE 9TH ANNUAL WOMEN AND INFLUENCE CONFERENCE

When: Saturday, December 3rd, 9 a.m. to 3:45 p.m.

Registration is now open for the 9th Annual Women and Influence Conference, which brings together advocates and “allows women to come together to focus and voice their opinions on issues of importance to women, girls, and their families in our region.”

This year’s Conference will focus on women in the workforce, including the hurdles they face in their careers or occupations, as well as progress made and visions for the future. In addition, Congresswoman Alyson Schwartz will provide the keynote address.

CITY HALL TO HOST 2ND ANNUAL OPEN HOUSE

On Monday, November 14th, City Hall will play host to an open house from 4 to 6 p.m. The event will include tours, discussions on educational opportunities, volunteer opportunities and collection of goods for the annual African Daughters of Fine Lineage’s annual Thanksgiving event for the homeless.

For the Thanksgiving event, items needed include:

•Juice boxes and cans of soda
•Individually wrapped snacks like granola and candy bars
•Cold weather items-boots, coats and sleeping bags
•Colored underwear (men's & women's, esp. larger sizes)
•Toiletries, including toothbrushes and toothpaste, deodorant and other personal hygiene items

Federal Policy Updates  CONGRESS IN AGREEMENT TO WORK ON A 6-MONTH CONTINUING RESOLUTION Last week House and Senate leaders announced that a deal has been reached to pass a 6-month continuing resolution to fund the federal government through next spring. Details of the agreement have not yet been made public, but the continuing resolution will reportedly fund federal agencies at current spending levels. (via The Census Project ) Next Tuesday, June 19 is an important date to mark on your calendar. The Congressional Joint Economic Committee is holding a public hearing on the economic impact of eliminating the American Community Survey (ACS) at 2:30 p.m., in Room 210 of the Canon House Office Building. Witnesses that will be speaking in opposition to the move to eliminate the ACS are Vincent Barabba, former director of the Census Bureau in two GOP administrations and Ken Simonson, chief economist for the Association of General Contractors and also representing the National Association of Business Economists. It is very important that we pack the congressional hearing room! If you cannot come, please urge your colleages to come. Overlooked and Undercounted: Struggling to Make Ends Meet in Pennsylvania

Census data tells us that 13% of Pennsylvania households live in poverty. In reality, even more households don’t have the income they need to reach self-sufficiency. One in four Pennsylvania households – over 846,000 – lack enough income to cover just the necessities. Since 1997, PathWays PA has worked with Dr. Diana Pearce and the University of Washington to calculate  The Self-Sufficiency Standard for Pennsylvania . Over the last 23 years,  The Self-Sufficiency Standard of Pennsylvania  has documented the continuing increase in the real cost of living, illuminating the economic crunch experienced by so many families today.
