Alternative Staffing Organizations: Finding the Right Fit for Workers and Employers

This webinar provides an opportunity for sector initiatives and others to learn about alternative staffing organizations (ASOs), which use a fee-for-service model to help unemployed job-seekers gain employment. Like sector initiatives, ASOs serve as intermediaries in their local labor markets, providing supports and opportunities for job-seekers while becoming trusted sources of employees for their business customers.
In the webinar, staff from Goodwill Staffing Services in Austin, Texas will describe the services they provide to businesses and job-seekers, and will discuss how their operations have developed as well as how those operations fit within a larger organization that provides other workforce development and social enterprise programs. Researchers from the University of Massachusetts Boston will describe results from their study of the Alternative Staffing Demonstration II and provide an overview of worker outcomes related to their alternative staffing work experience. Staff from the National Network of Sector Partners (NNSP) will share examples of sector initiatives around the country that are incorporating an alternative staffing model into their operations.

The Congressional Joint Economic Committee is holding a public hearing on the economic impact of eliminating the American Community Survey (ACS) at 2:30 p.m., in Room 210 of the Canon House Office Building. Witnesses that will be speaking in opposition to the move to eliminate the ACS are Vincent Barabba, former director of the Census Bureau in two GOP administrations and Ken Simonson, chief economist for the Association of General Contractors and also representing the National Association of Business Economists. Overlooked and Undercounted: Struggling to Make Ends Meet in Pennsylvania

Census data tells us that 13% of Pennsylvania households live in poverty. In reality, even more households don’t have the income they need to reach self-sufficiency. One in four Pennsylvania households – over 846,000 – lack enough income to cover just the necessities.
