For the last four decades, the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) has played a critical role in the lives of millions of Americans in the fight against hunger and improved nutrition. In fiscal year 2011, SNAP served nearly 45 million people. As re-authorization of SNAP approaches, policymakers and interested citizens need reliable information to assess the program’s strengths and identify opportunities for improvement.

A new FNS report, Building a Healthy America: A Profile of the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program provides a summary of past research on program operations and outcomes. We hope you find the information useful and look forward to continuing our work together to provide SNAP benefits to those Americans in need.
