SIGN-ON LETTER IN SUPPORT OF VAWA REAUTHORIZATION
The Violence Against Women Act (VAWA), enacted in 1994, was the first piece of American legislation that recognized the pervasive nature of domestic violence, dating violence, sexual assault and stalking. VAWA programs give law enforcement, prosecutors and judges the tools they need to hold offenders accountable and keep communities safe, while supporting survivors and recognizing their role in the fight to end gender-based violence.
VAWA needs to be reauthorized to ensure the continuation of these vital, life-saving programs and laws. In addition, this is also an opportunity to expand VAWA by improving services available to LGBTQ survivors of violence, breaking down barriers to services for undocumented survivors, and continuing prevention efforts to counter the high levels of violence against Native American and Native Alaskan women.

State Policy Updates
GENERAL ASSISTANCE ENDS THIS WEEK
Cash benefits for over 60,000 Pennsylvanians will end this Wednesday with the ending of the General Assistance program. General Assistance was a safety net program for Pennsylvanians who are unable to work. Individuals on General Assistance received $205 a month to help pay their necessary expenses like rent, prescriptions, or transportation.
This program was cut this year as part of the state budget. It is crucial that current recipients of General Assistance are aware that this program is ending.
Community Legal Services has put together a flyer you can post and share with your clients. They have also written a fact sheet with answers to some frequently asked questions about the program ending.

COUNTDOWN TO COVERAGE EVENT: BEING A WOMAN WILL GET EASIER ON AUGUST 1ST!
Starting on August 1, all new insurance plans will have to start covering important preventative health services for women, such as contraception, screening and counseling for domestic violence, annual well-woman visits, and breastfeeding supports, without charging co-pays. Expensive co-pays are a major barrier for women and can prevent them from getting the care they need.
This preventative care provision will create a powerful tool for improving the health of women and we are so excited to celebrate this victory for women's health!
During the event, we will be raising public awareness around this important benefit for women by holding up signs and handing out literature to passerbys. Don't worry about bringing anything -- we will provide it all for you.

VOTER ID LEGAL ASSISTANCE CLINIC
Attorneys from SeniorLAW Center, Face to Face, and area law firms will meet privately with individuals of all ages to learn more about the new Voter ID law and help with applications for birth certificates and other documents to obtain ID for voting.

PA DEPARTMENT OF AGING ANNOUNCES NEW CUSTOMER SERVICE LINE
The Pennsylvania Department of Aging has announced a new toll-free number to help consumers with questions about long-term living and services for people with disabilities.
The Link to Aging and Disability Resource Center line, 1-800-753-8827, is answered by trained customer service staff from 8:30am to 5pm, Monday through Friday, excluding holidays.
The toll-free number previously used for the former Long Term Living Helpline, 1-866-286-3636, will automatically connect callers to the new service.

READY, SET, REGISTER: NONPROFIT VOTER REGISTRATION
Registering to vote is the first step to becoming an active and engaged voter. In 2008, nine out of ten registered voters cast a ballot; among those who did not vote, many noted that they encountered problems with their registration.

THE 2012 ROSALINDE GILBERT INNOVATIONS IN ALZHEIMER'S DISEASE CAREGIVING LEGACY AWARDS
Three awards of $20,000 each will be awarded to nonprofit organizations, government agencies or universities responding to a community need with a program or project which focuses primarily on family/informal caregivers of adults with Alzheimer's disease and related dementias. Only agencies operating within the continental United States are eligible to apply. One award will be granted in each of these categories:

What would raising the federal minimum wage do?
- Rebuild our economy. For every $1 added to the minimum wage, low-wage worker households spend an additional $2,800 the following year.
- Ensure a better future for our children. 21.5 million children have a parent who would benefit from a minimum wage increase.
- Increase jobs. Increasing the minimum wage would boost consumer spending, which drives 70% of our economy.
