A Part-Time Life, as Hours Shrink and Shift-Surviving in a Changing Economy

Shannon Hardin earns $10.90 an hour at her part-time job.  “I can’t live on this,” she said. “It’s almost impossible.” -Sandy Huffaker for The New York Times- The widening use of part-timers has been a bane to many workers, pushing many into poverty and forcing some onto food stamps and Medicaid.  And with work schedules that change week to week, workers can find it hard to arrange child care, attend college or hold a second job, according to interviews with more than 40 part-time workers. In in two leading industries — retailing and hospitality — the number of part-timers who would prefer to work full-time has jumped to 3.1 million, or two-and-a-half times the 2006 level, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. In retailing alone, nearly 30 percent of part-timers want full-time jobs, up from 10.6 percent in 2006. Penn State Campus Raises Human Trafficking Awareness

Available to answer calls from anywhere in the country,  24 hours a day, 7 days a week, every day of the year. Members of the Penn State DuBois Diversity Committee, in conjunction with the Student Life Office, organized programs in "The Stackpole Hall Diversity Series" this week to help inform the campus community of the global crisis surrounding human trafficking. According to the Global Initiative to Fight Human Trafficking, an estimated 2.5 million people are in forced labor, including sexual exploitation, at any given time as a result of human trafficking. Pennsylvania is one of few states in the country with no specific laws regulating human sex trafficking, which is also an issue of overwhelming proportions around the country. Read the Full Story

HELP Vote for Homes! ON ELECTION DAY! The Vote for Homes! Coalition is a nonpartisan coalition registering thousands of people who are living on low incomes, including those who are homeless, living with disabilities, or are formerly incarcerated. Drivers and Assistants for Election Day are needed.  Volunteers must come through a training to help transport voters and give voter ID information. Understanding Domestic Violence and How to Stop it

The 2012 nationwide Mary Kay Truth About Abuse Survey showed that "8 out of 10 domestic violence shelters nationwide reported an increase in women seeking help." The economy has had an effect. Not only is demand up while "funding, services and prevention efforts are down," but the survey went on to report that "74 percent of women stayed with an abuser longer for economic reasons, [and] 58 percent of shelters reported that the abuse is more violent now than before the economic downturn."
