How Will Sequestration Particularly Impact Pennsylvania?

Sequestration is scheduled to take place on Friday, March 1, and Pennsylvania will lose $4.4 million in funds that support mostly disabled and formerly homeless adults and their families in permanent housing programs, and transitional housing for homeless persons and families.

Please see this chart showing how each region in Pennsylvania might be affected. As you can see from the chart, Philadelphia alone stands to lose almost $1.5 million.

We strongly urge you to contact Senators Toomey and Brady, and your Congressional House member today to speak out against this looming threat to the people and families that we serve.

Effective immediately, the Department of Public Welfare has increased the Gross Income Limit for families eligible for food stamps from 130% of the Federal Poverty Level ($28,665 for a family of four) to 160% of the FPL ($35,280 for the same family). Additionally, all one or two person households under the Gross Income Limit (160% FPL for most families, but 200% FPL for senior and disabled households) are eligible for at least $16/month in food stamps, even if they are above the Net Income Limit. Final Vote on FMAP Extension Today: Help Balance Pennsylvania’s Budget

Last night the U.S. House Committee on Rules set the stage for a vote today on H.R. 4213 -the American Jobs and Closing Tax Loopholes Act of 2010. Despite some modifications to the bill, the extended enhanced Medicaid match rate (FMAP) remains in the bill. The extension includes $24.1 billion for 6 months, of which Pennsylvania will receive $848 million. H.R. 4213 also includes crucial extension of the provisions in the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) related to unemployment, COBRA, a temporary extension of the Emergency Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) fund, as well as other provisions. This enhanced FMAP is central to PA balancing its 2010-2011 budget without deep cuts to education, health and human services and the job losses that inevitably would follow. In Pennsylvania, a large and diverse group of families are experiencing economic distress and are routinely overlooked and undercounted. That’s the finding from PathWays PA’s latest publication, Overlooked and Undercounted: Struggling to Make Ends Meet in Pennsylvania, which uses The Self-Sufficiency Standard of Pennsylvania to determine how many households live below self-sufficiency.
