Save a Life Through Organ Donation! Support HB30 and SB850!

Right now in Pennsylvania more than 8,000 men, women and children are waiting for a life-saving organ transplant. Over the last 10 years, an average of 490 people died annually waiting for organs in our Commonwealth.

That number can be reduced with the passage of House Bill 30 and Senate Bill 850 - The Donate Life PA Act. This bill will ensure that more life-saving organs are donated by increasing public education, strengthening oversight of organ donation, clarifying decision-making authority over donations, and reducing unnecessary denials of organ recoveries.

Effective immediately, the Department of Public Welfare has increased the Gross Income Limit for families eligible for food stamps from 130% of the Federal Poverty Level ($28,665 for a family of four) to 160% of the FPL ($35,280 for the same family). Additionally, all one or two person households under the Gross Income Limit (160% FPL for most families, but 200% FPL for senior and disabled households) are eligible for at least $16/month in food stamps, even if they are above the Net Income Limit. PathWays PA will Release Overlooked and Undercounted on May 12! (#pressrelease)

In Pennsylvania, a large and diverse group of families are experiencing economic distress and are routinely overlooked and undercounted. That’s the finding from PathWays PA’s latest publication, Overlooked and Undercounted: Struggling to Make Ends Meet in Pennsylvania, which uses The Self-Sufficiency Standard of Pennsylvania to determine how many households live below self-sufficiency. PathWays PA, a service and advocacy organization for women, children and families, is releasing this report to examine the impact of education, gender, and race on the overlooked and undercounted in Pennsylvania as they relate to the Self-Sufficiency Standard. Final Vote on FMAP Extension Today: Help Balance Pennsylvania’s Budget

Last night the U.S. House Committee on Rules set the stage for a vote today on H.R. 4213 -the American Jobs and Closing Tax Loopholes Act of 2010. Despite some modifications to the bill, the extended enhanced Medicaid match rate (FMAP) remains in the bill. The extension includes $24.1 billion for 6 months, of which Pennsylvania will receive $848 million. H.R. 4213 also includes crucial extension of the provisions in the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) related to unemployment, COBRA, a temporary extension of the Emergency Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) fund, as well as other provisions. This enhanced FMAP is central to PA balancing its 2010-2011 budget without deep cuts to education, health and human services and the job losses that inevitably would follow.
