Opportunity to Respond to HUD Youth Documents and Annual Report

The needs of runaway and homeless youth continue to be an issue across the country and right here in our community. As the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) works to meet President Obama’s “Opening Doors” mandate to end youth homelessness by 2020, HUD released some youth specific documents in the past month.

These documents include "Children and Youth and HUD’s Homeless Definition." In this document, readers can find outlines and summaries of the four categories of HUD Homelessness assistance program eligibility. A letter regarding HUD's work with youth homelessness has also been issued.

HUD also recently released their 2014 Annual Homeless Assessment Report. According to the National Network for Youth and others, this report includes "misleading data" - you can read a press release from national organizations here.

The National Network for Youth is offering organizations and advocates an opportunity to bring their comments to HUD. You can answer these brief questions to let them know what questions and concerns you may have about these documents by November 14, 2014.

If you are a runaway or homeless youth or know of youth who need assistance, there are programs that can help. PathWays PA runs a Basic Center for teen girls in West Philadelphia with room for five residential clients and an after-school drop-in center. The teen lounge will be available for girls ages 13-17 in Philadelphia on Tuesdays and Thursdays, from 4:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. Teen girls can get homework help, a snack, sign up for support and life skills groups or just hang out. Mini-Budget Update-Supporting the American Community Survey

The Congressional Joint Economic Committee is holding a public hearing on the economic impact of eliminating the American Community Survey (ACS) at 2:30 p.m., in Room 210 of the Canon House Office Building. Witnesses that will be speaking in opposition to the move to eliminate the ACS are Vincent Barabba, former director of the Census Bureau in two GOP administrations and Ken Simonson, chief economist for the Association of General Contractors and also representing the National Association of Business Economists. Overlooked and Undercounted: Struggling to Make Ends Meet in Pennsylvania

Census data tells us that 13% of Pennsylvania households live in poverty. In reality, even more households don’t have the income they need to reach self-sufficiency. One in four Pennsylvania households – over 846,000 – lack enough income to cover just the necessities. Since 1997, PathWays PA has worked with Dr. Diana Pearce and the University of Washington to calculate  The Self-Sufficiency Standard for Pennsylvania .
