Birth Certificate Clinic in Philadelphia on October 14

Birth certificates are often needed to receive medical assistance, housing and other public benefits, to obtain a Pennsylvania driver’s or nondriver’s license, for access to many public buildings, for general identification and for many other purposes. Unfortunately, individuals who become homeless due to domestic violence or other reasons do not always have access to these important documents. Since there is also a $20 fee for each birth certificate in Pennsylvania, getting new copies is challenging for low-income and homeless families.

To help alleviate these needs, The Homeless Advocacy Project is sponsoring a FREE Birth Certificate Legal Clinic for homeless individuals and families at PECO headquarters at 2301 Market Street from 9-10:30 am on Wednesday, October 14, 2015. For questions, please call HAP at 215.523.9595.

Homeless individuals who attend this free clinic will meet with an advocate who will request birth certificates for them and their minor children free of charge. More information and a flyer is available here.

Mini-Budget Update-Supporting the American Community Survey

(via The Census Project ) Next Tuesday, June 19 is an important date to mark on your calendar. The Congressional Joint Economic Committee is holding a public hearing on the economic impact of eliminating the American Community Survey (ACS) at 2:30 p.m., in Room 210 of the Canon House Office Building. Witnesses that will be speaking in opposition to the move to eliminate the ACS are Vincent Barabba, former director of the Census Bureau in two GOP administrations and Ken Simonson, chief economist for the Association of General Contractors and also representing the National Association of Business Economists.
