**BREAKING NEWS - A judge issued a temporary ruling blocking the end of DACA and requiring the Administration to keep accepting DACA renewal applications. But there is still work to be done - see below!**

Last year, President Trump announced the end of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program. Under DACA, an executive action based on the Dream Act, recipients must have come to the United States as a child, be in school, and not have committed any crime. Since its inception, nearly 800,000 young people have signed up so that they could live, work, and study in the United States, the country they consider home.

Now, 122 DACA recipients are losing their status each day. With the loss of the DACA status comes the end of DACA recipients' work authorization, the loss of their driver's licenses, and the possibility that they may be detained and deported.

DACA has now become a key part of federal budget negotiations. Democrats say they won't support a spending deal that doesn't include a fix for Dreamers, while President Trump is requiring funding for a wall between the US and Mexico before he will include DACA. With a budget deadline coming at the end of next week, legislators need to know where their constituents stand on these issues.

Action Steps

  • Call your legislator today at (202) 224-3121. Here's a sample script: "My name is ___, and I live in ___'s district. I am calling today to share my feelings on DACA." Then share one or two sentences about how important you think DACA is.
  • The Coalition on Human Needs is holding a DACA call in day January 11. Call 1-888-778-6856 to reach your Member of Congress. They will give you a short script by phone in English or Spanish. You can also use weareheretostay.org to get call legislators and ask them to pass the Dream Act.

The Congressional Joint Economic Committee is holding a public hearing on the economic impact of eliminating the American Community Survey (ACS) at 2:30 p.m., in Room 210 of the Canon House Office Building. Witnesses that will be speaking in opposition to the move to eliminate the ACS are Vincent Barabba, former director of the Census Bureau in two GOP administrations and Ken Simonson, chief economist for the Association of General Contractors and also representing the National Association of Business Economists.
